Ford Mustang GTD Crushes Nürburgring, Chasing Porsche’s Time
The Nürburgring Nordschleife has always been the place where legends are made or broken, and now two of the fiercest machines from opposite sides of the Atlantic have posted blistering lap times that demand attention. Ford’s latest performance icon, the Mustang GTD, clocked in an official lap time of 6:52.072, shaking up the leaderboard and becoming the fastest American production car ever to take on the Green Hell.
Driven by professional racer Dirk Müller, the Mustang GTD was built for this kind of glory. With a 5.2-liter supercharged V8 pushing out around 815 horsepower, rear-wheel drive, and a price tag of roughly $325,000, this limited-production Mustang was never just about muscle—it is about precision and track-ready confidence. Every aspect of the car was designed with Nürburgring in mind, from its Multimatic-developed suspension system to a highly tuned aerodynamic package that maximizes downforce through every twist and straight.
But even with all that American engineering muscle, it still trails one of the most surgically engineered performance cars ever created—the Porsche 911 GT3 RS with the Weissach Package. Back in 2022, Jörg Bergmeister pushed the 992.1-generation GT3 RS to a time of 6:49.328. While the power output may seem more modest with its naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six producing 525 horsepower, Porsche’s lap time comes down to decades of track dominance, aerodynamic brilliance, and meticulous chassis tuning. The Weissach Package goes even further, incorporating magnesium wheels, extensive use of carbon fiber, and over 860 kilograms of downforce at 285 kilometers per hour.
What is wild here is not just the speed but how close Ford came to Porsche’s time on their home turf. While the Porsche still reigns supreme, the Mustang GTD is proof that the American performance scene is not playing catch-up anymore—it is here to compete, to challenge, and sometimes, to win.
