BYD’s New Blade Battery Charges to 97% in Under 10 Minutes

BYD is pushing the electric vehicle industry forward again with the reveal of its second generation Blade battery, a new technology designed to dramatically reduce charging times. The company also introduced its new Flash charging network, which delivers enormous power levels that exceed the megawatt chargers that appeared last year. Together, these innovations are meant to bring ultra fast charging closer to everyday drivers rather than limiting it to experimental prototypes.

The timing of the announcement is important. Despite being the world’s largest electric vehicle manufacturer, BYD recently experienced a significant slowdown in sales. February deliveries dropped by about 41 percent, marking the sharpest decline the company has seen since the pandemic years. Competition in China’s electric vehicle market has become extremely intense, with dozens of manufacturers fighting for attention. BYD is now responding by accelerating the rollout of advanced battery technology that could reshape expectations for charging convenience.

At the center of the announcement is the second generation Blade battery. According to BYD, the pack can charge from 10 percent to 70 percent in roughly 5 minutes. A deeper charge from 10 percent to 97 percent takes less than 10 minutes. In practical terms, this means drivers could gain hundreds of miles of driving range during a short stop, making the experience much closer to refueling a gasoline vehicle.

What makes the development even more impressive is how the battery behaves in extreme weather. Cold temperatures have always been a challenge for lithium ion battery chemistry. When temperatures drop, the internal movement of electrons slows down, which makes charging much less efficient. BYD demonstrated that the new Blade battery can charge from 20 percent to 97 percent at temperatures as low as minus 22 degrees Fahrenheit, which is about minus 30 degrees Celsius. Even under those conditions, the full charge takes only around 12 minutes, just a few minutes longer than it would take in normal temperatures.

BYD showed this performance in a video shared on China’s social media platform Weibo. The demonstration featured two high end electric vehicles: the Denza Z9GT luxury electric wagon and the Yangwang U7 premium performance sedan. Both vehicles were connected to the company’s new Flash charging stations, which are capable of delivering up to 1,500 kilowatts of power.

During the demonstration, both vehicles began charging with a battery level of 9 percent and an estimated driving range of 93 kilometers, or about 57 miles. In just 9 minutes and 51 seconds, the battery level climbed to 97 percent. The vehicle display then showed a projected range of 1,008 kilometers, which is roughly 626 miles. This figure is likely based on the China Light Duty Test Cycle, which is typically more optimistic than the Environmental Protection Agency testing used in the United States.

Safety remains a critical part of the conversation around electric vehicle batteries. China has introduced some of the strictest battery safety rules in the world. Automakers must prove that a battery pack will not ignite or explode for at least 2 hours after a single cell experiences thermal runaway. BYD says the new Blade battery meets these standards and even demonstrated nail penetration tests on a full battery pack. During those tests, the pack did not catch fire, highlighting the design’s focus on stability and protection.

Another important takeaway is that this technology is not years away from production. BYD confirmed that the second generation Blade battery is already planned for around 10 upcoming production vehicles. These include models such as the Yangwang U7, Denza Z9GT, Seal 07, Sealion 06, and several additional vehicles in the company’s growing lineup.

For drivers, the real promise of this technology is simple. If charging times continue to drop to just a few minutes, the convenience gap between electric vehicles and traditional gasoline cars could nearly disappear. BYD’s latest battery and charging system suggests that the next phase of electric mobility may arrive sooner than many people expected.
