BMW’s New System Can Prevent Rear Collisions

BMW’s latest Rear Collision Avoidance and Mitigation technology is designed to add another layer of protection when drivers are maneuvering in tight or busy areas. The system combines ultrasonic sensors, surround view cameras, rear side radar sensors, and automatic braking to watch areas that can be difficult for the driver to see.

Active Park Distance Control can detect stationary or moving objects around the vehicle. If the system recognizes an immediate collision risk, it can automatically apply the brakes at the rear. With BMW’s newest generation, braking protection can also work along the sides of the vehicle, helping reduce the chance of contact during close parking maneuvers.

The technology becomes especially useful when reversing out of a parking space onto a busy street. Rear side radar sensors monitor approaching cross traffic, including cyclists and other road users, while the rearview camera and bird’s eye view give the driver additional visibility.

These assistance functions are managed by BMW’s central driving computer, which has approximately 20 times the computing power of the previous system, allowing faster, coordinated intervention when danger is detected.
