BMW Neue Klasse Gets Next Generation Safety Technology

BMW Neue Klasse Gets Next Generation Safety Technology

BMW is using its Neue Klasse generation to introduce much more than new electric vehicles, advanced displays, and faster computers. Safety is becoming a major part of the transformation, with an expanded collection of active assistance technologies becoming standard across several BMW model lines. The BMW iX3 is the first Neue Klasse production vehicle to receive these systems, while future models including the BMW i3, BMW X5, and BMW 7 Series are expected to follow.

One of the most interesting additions addresses a surprisingly common accident involving parked cars. BMW’s upgraded exit warning system uses side radar sensors to monitor approaching traffic, including cars, motorcycles, bicycles, and other road users. When the system detects a possible collision, the electronic door lock can temporarily delay the door from opening. This could be particularly valuable for cyclists, who can have very little time to react when someone suddenly opens a vehicle door into their path.

BMW is also introducing a more cooperative approach to driver assistance through Symbiotic Drive. Instead of constantly fighting against the person behind the wheel, the technology attempts to understand what the driver intends to do. Steering movement, use of the turn signal, and even a shoulder check can help the vehicle determine whether a maneuver is deliberate. The Lane Keeping Assistant can therefore remain in the background during intentional movements while stepping in when it detects an unintended departure or potential collision.

Emergency steering technology is another important development. The vehicle can automatically steer around an obstacle while remaining inside its lane when enough room is available. It can also provide a brief steering intervention if another vehicle approaches dangerously from the side. Meanwhile, the Emergency Brake Assistant can apply braking up to full deceleration and provide evasive steering support when facing an imminent collision. Improved sensing also expands its ability to react to animals and wildlife.

Driver monitoring has become more advanced as well. If the vehicle determines through its driver camera that the person behind the wheel is no longer capable of driving, the Attentiveness Assistant can temporarily take control, bring the BMW to a controlled stop, activate the hazard lights, and initiate an emergency call.

BMW has also focused heavily on low speed situations. Active Park Distance Control can automatically brake when stationary or moving obstacles are detected, including objects approaching from the sides. Cross traffic emergency braking helps when reversing from parking spaces, while start monitoring is designed to recognize accidental accelerator use. If an obstacle is less than 1 meter away and the accelerator is pressed unusually hard at speeds up to 2 kilometers per hour, the vehicle can intervene and stop.

All of these systems are brought together by BMW’s new automated driving computer. The water cooled central processor offers approximately 20 times the computing performance of the previous system and manages active safety, automated driving, and parking technologies.

The BMW iX3 has already earned a 5 star Euro New Car Assessment Programme safety rating under significantly revised 2026 testing procedures. For BMW, the Neue Klasse is therefore becoming more than a new vehicle platform. It represents a move toward cars that continuously watch their surroundings, understand the driver’s intentions, and intervene only when the situation truly demands it.
