A $2.6 Million Corvette ZR1X With a Mission Bigger Than Speed
On January 24, something unusual happened in the world of American performance cars, and it had nothing to do with lap times alone. A one of one Stars and Steel inspired Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X crossed the auction block at the Barrett-Jackson 2026 Scottsdale Auction and sold for an incredible $2.6 million. This was not just another record sale. It was a moment where speed, craftsmanship, and purpose came together.
Every dollar from the winning bid went directly to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting Gold Star families, fallen first responder families with young children, and veterans who suffered catastrophic injuries in the line of duty. Chevrolet chose this foundation intentionally, tying the Stars and Steel theme to the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States and the values that shaped it.
This particular Corvette ZR1X was built as a true one of one. It wears a custom Dark Satin Steel finish applied by hand at General Motors Design Fabrication, accented by blue brake calipers, a Santorini Blue interior, and blue highlights on the carbon fiber aero wing. Beyond the visuals, the buyer also received an experience few car owners will ever touch, including the chance to personally assemble the twin turbo V8 engine that powers the rear wheels.
The winning bidder was Rick Hendrick, chairman and chief executive officer of Hendrick Automotive Group and owner of Hendrick Motorsports. Along with the car, he will take delivery at the General Motors Design Dome and receive curated memorabilia tied to the project. It is not just ownership. It is participation in Corvette history.
Chevrolet and General Motors have worked with Tunnel to Towers for more than 12 years, raising over $11.6 million before this auction even took place. With this sale, Chevrolet’s eighth generation Corvette charity efforts at Barrett-Jackson now total $15.5 million, reinforcing a long standing commitment that goes beyond marketing and into real world impact.
The auction also marked the return of the Build Your Own Engine program, last offered on Corvette in 2019. Starting this spring, customers ordering a Corvette Z06, ZR1, or ZR1X can add this experience and work directly with master builders at the Performance Build Center in Bowling Green to assemble and sign the V8 that powers their car. It is a rare connection between driver and machine that very few brands are willing to offer.
This Corvette ZR1X proves that performance does not have to stand alone. Sometimes the most powerful thing a car can do is help change lives.
