2028 Honda Accord Could Look Like This
Honda has given us an intriguing look at where its next generation hybrid sedans are heading, and the Honda Hybrid Sedan Prototype could provide some major clues about a future 2028 Honda Accord. Honda has not officially confirmed that this prototype will become the next Accord, so the connection remains a prediction. However, its size, proportions, timing, and position in Honda’s future hybrid strategy make the possibility difficult to ignore.
The prototype takes a very different approach from today’s Accord. Instead of a traditional sedan profile, it has a lower, wider appearance with a long wheelbase and a sweeping fastback style roof. The front end is short and clean, with extremely thin lighting elements and a wide lower opening. From the rear, a full width light bar and sharply shaped bodywork give the car a much more futuristic appearance.
Honda says production vehicles previewed by its latest prototypes are expected to arrive within the next 2 years. That timeline could potentially place a production version in the 2027 or 2028 period.
Underneath the body, the changes could be even more important. Honda is preparing a new generation hybrid system centered around a newly developed 2.0 liter direct injection Atkinson cycle engine and updated electric drive technology. Honda is also targeting more than a 10% improvement in fuel economy for vehicles using its next generation hybrid technologies.
The new platform is expected to reduce weight by approximately 90 kilograms, or about 198 pounds, compared with Honda’s current architecture. Honda is also developing electric all wheel drive technology for its future hybrids, although there is currently no confirmation that the next Accord will receive it.
Honda S+ Shift is another technology to watch. The system can coordinate engine speed and electric motor output to create a more engaging sensation of changing gears. Combined with Honda’s focus on making its future hybrids more enjoyable to drive, the next Accord could become considerably more interesting than a simple fuel economy focused sedan.
The white car shown here is a rendering based on Honda’s Hybrid Sedan Prototype and available information about Honda’s next generation technology. It is not an official 2028 Accord design. But if Honda carries the prototype’s proportions and styling philosophy into production, the next Accord could represent one of the biggest transformations in the model’s history.
