2028 BMW M5 Revealed? All That We Know About BMW’s New Sedan

The next chapter of the BMW M5 is already taking shape, even though the current generation has only recently reached customers. Engineers have been putting heavily camouflaged prototypes through testing at the Nürburgring, giving enthusiasts an early glimpse of what appears to be the updated 2028 BMW M5 Sedan. While the car keeps the same basic proportions as today’s model, several noticeable changes suggest BMW is preparing a much larger refresh than a typical mid cycle update.

The most obvious difference is at the front. Spy photos reveal a completely redesigned nose inspired by BMW’s upcoming Neue Klasse styling language. Instead of the large vertical kidney grilles found on the current M5, the prototype appears to feature a slimmer grille design that blends more naturally into the headlights. The front bumper also looks cleaner, with reshaped air intakes that give the sedan a more modern and aggressive appearance without going overboard.

Around the back, the updates are expected to be more subtle. Revised light emitting diode taillights, a refreshed rear bumper, and slight changes to the diffuser appear to be part of the package. Fortunately for performance fans, the signature quad exhaust outlets remain, reminding everyone that this is still one of BMW’s highest performing road cars.

Inside the cabin, the biggest transformation may be waiting. Reports suggest BMW plans to introduce its latest Panoramic iDrive display along with an updated infotainment system and a redesigned dashboard. Physical buttons are expected to become even fewer, creating a cleaner and more technology focused interior. The overall layout should move much closer to the futuristic cabins that BMW has previewed on its newest concept vehicles.

Under the hood, there is little reason to expect major changes. The current 4.4 liter twin turbocharged V8 engine paired with a plug in hybrid system already delivers an impressive 717 horsepower and 738 pound feet of torque. Instead of chasing higher output, BMW appears focused on refining the software, improving efficiency, and further sharpening the driving experience. The charging port visible on the test vehicles also confirms the hybrid system is here to stay.

BMW engineers continue to push prototypes hard during testing, suggesting suspension tuning, steering response, and overall chassis balance remain priorities before the updated model reaches production. Although many details remain under wraps, everything seen so far points toward an M5 that embraces BMW’s future design philosophy while preserving the performance and character that have made the model a benchmark in the high performance luxury sedan segment.
