2027 Sierra AT4X vs Silverado ZR2 – Which Is Better?

The 2027 GMC Sierra AT4X and 2027 Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 show just how serious General Motors has become about factory off-road trucks. They share much of the same underlying engineering, but the personalities are different enough to make choosing between them interesting.

Both trucks step up to massive 35-inch mud-terrain tires, a 2-inch factory suspension lift, front and rear electronic locking differentials, and Multimatic Dynamic Suspensions Spool Valve dampers. Additional jounce dampers help control harder impacts when the trucks are moving quickly across rough terrain. Buyers will also have access to General Motors’ new generation of engines, including 5.7-liter and 6.6-liter naturally aspirated V8 options, while the 3.0-liter Duramax turbo-diesel remains available.

Inside, the similarities continue. Large digital displays dominate both cabins, including a 16.3-inch center touchscreen and 12.2-inch driver display. However, GMC takes the more upscale approach. The Sierra AT4X features a Timber Mahogany interior, premium materials, detailed stitching, and a standard panoramic sunroof.

The Silverado ZR2 feels more performance focused. Its cabin gets Torch Red accents, unique seats, red edged seatbelts, and real forged carbon fiber trim. On the outside, the ZR2 also has a more aggressive appearance that fits its off-road personality.

So which one would I choose? The Silverado ZR2 gets my vote.

The Sierra AT4X is probably the better choice for someone who wants serious off-road capability combined with a more luxurious cabin. But if both trucks offer 35-inch tires, dual lockers, Multimatic suspension technology, and similar engine choices, I would rather lean fully into the rugged side of the equation. The ZR2 looks tougher, its interior feels sportier, and its personality better matches what I want from a dedicated off-road pickup.

The decision may ultimately come down to pricing and final engine specifications, but right now, the 2027 Silverado ZR2 would be the one parked in my driveway.
