2027 Range Rover Electric Has 333 Miles of Range
Range Rover is entering a new era with the arrival of the Range Rover Electric, the first fully battery powered version of the flagship luxury sport utility vehicle in its 56 year history. It keeps the familiar Range Rover shape and luxury focused character, but replaces the traditional gasoline engine with a powerful dual motor electric system. For the United States market, pricing starts at $138,000 before destination charges.
The Range Rover Electric uses 2 permanent magnet electric motors, with 1 positioned at each axle to provide all wheel drive. Together, they produce 542 horsepower and 627 pound feet of torque. That torque figure is particularly impressive because it is higher than any previous Range Rover, regardless of the type of engine under the hood.
Performance is also much stronger than its large size might suggest. Range Rover says the electric model can accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in as little as 4.3 seconds. Acceleration from 50 to 75 miles per hour takes just 2.7 seconds, giving drivers the immediate response normally associated with powerful electric performance vehicles. The company describes the experience as delivering performance comparable to a V8 powered Range Rover, but without using gasoline.
Energy comes from a large 118.5 kilowatt hour lithium ion battery containing 344 prismatic cells. The battery uses a double stacked design and works with an 800 volt electrical architecture. According to the Environmental Protection Agency rating, the Range Rover Electric can travel up to 333 miles on a full charge.
Range Rover has also placed considerable attention on charging speed. When connected to a compatible 350 kilowatt direct current fast charger, the battery can charge from 10 percent to 80 percent in approximately 22 minutes. Under ideal conditions, around 10 minutes of fast charging can add approximately 125 miles of driving range.
Going electric has not meant abandoning the capability that has defined Range Rover for decades. The new model uses Integrated Traction Management, which can adjust electric motor speed in only 50 milliseconds when changing conditions are detected. Range Rover says that response is approximately 100 times faster than what is possible with a traditional combustion engine system reacting to wheel slip.
Intelligent Driveline Dynamics further manages traction by controlling how much torque reaches the rear wheels. Depending on the situation, the system can send anywhere from 0 percent to 100 percent of the available rear torque, helping the vehicle maintain stability and grip on pavement or challenging terrain.
One of the more interesting additions is Single Pedal driving for difficult off road situations. The system allows the driver to control the vehicle primarily through the accelerator while climbing slopes as steep as 33 degrees or descending grades of up to 45 degrees. Water crossings remain firmly within the Range Rover playbook as well, with the electric model capable of wading through water up to 35 inches deep.
Despite the completely different powertrain, Range Rover has worked to make the Electric feel like a genuine member of the family rather than simply an electric vehicle wearing a familiar body. It shares its basic vehicle architecture with the gasoline, mild hybrid, and plug in hybrid Range Rover models.
Production takes place at the Solihull facility in the United Kingdom alongside other Range Rover versions. Jaguar Land Rover has retrained approximately 9,000 employees at the plant to prepare for electrification, while another 1,500 workers have received training at other locations across England’s West Midlands.
The batteries and electric drive units are produced at Jaguar Land Rover’s Electric Propulsion Manufacturing Centre in Wolverhampton. This approach allows the company to integrate electric vehicle manufacturing into the same broader production network that has supported its combustion powered vehicles.
Customers will have plenty of choice when configuring the Range Rover Electric. Both short wheelbase and long wheelbase versions are available, along with SE, Autobiography, SV, SV Black, and SV Ultra specifications. A First Edition is also offered with exterior colors including Belgravia Green, Santorini Black, and Varesine Blue, paired with distinctive Light Cloud Ultrafabrics and Kvadrat interior materials.
For North American customers, built in North American Charging Standard compatibility provides access to Tesla’s Supercharger network, adding another practical advantage for long distance driving. Buyers can also choose an optional home charging solution.
Range Rover covers the battery and electric motors with an 8 year or 100,000 mile warranty. That added protection could be important for buyers considering their first electric luxury sport utility vehicle.
At $138,000, the Range Rover Electric certainly remains a premium proposition. But this vehicle is about more than simply replacing an engine with batteries and motors. Range Rover is attempting to preserve the luxury, performance, road presence, and serious off road capability that made its flagship famous while moving it into the electric age. With 542 horsepower, 333 miles of estimated range, rapid 800 volt charging, and the ability to wade through 35 inches of water, this is one electric luxury sport utility vehicle that has not forgotten where the Range Rover name came from.
