2027 Ram Power Wagon Cummins Comes With a Catch

The 2027 Ram Power Wagon is getting something buyers have wanted for years: a Cummins diesel engine. For the first time, Ram is combining the Power Wagon name with the 6.7-liter Cummins turbocharged diesel inline 6-cylinder engine, creating a heavy-duty truck with serious towing muscle and plenty of off-road capability. However, adding the diesel comes with some important compromises.

The Cummins engine produces 430 horsepower and a massive 1,075 pound-feet of torque. It is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and sends power to all 4 wheels. With this combination, the diesel Power Wagon can tow up to 19,630 pounds and carry a payload of up to 2,930 pounds.

The Power Wagon still receives serious off-road hardware. It features coil-sprung axles, Bilstein shocks, electronic locking differentials at the front and rear, an electronically disconnecting front sway bar, and extensive underbody protection. Even the diesel exhaust fluid tank receives protection for trail driving.

But fitting the large Cummins engine changes the traditional Power Wagon formula. The factory front winch available on the gasoline model is gone because there is not enough room behind the bumper. The diesel model also loses Ram’s Articulink front suspension system, which helps provide additional axle movement off road.

There are other differences. The diesel Power Wagon rides on 20-inch wheels rather than the gasoline model’s 17-inch wheels, although it still receives tires measuring nearly 34 inches. Ground clearance drops from 14.2 inches on the gasoline Power Wagon to 13.2 inches with the diesel.

Inside, the Power Wagon remains impressively equipped. A 12-inch center display is standard, while an available 14.4-inch screen works with the Uconnect 5 infotainment system. Available equipment includes leather trim, heated and ventilated front seats, dual wireless phone chargers, power folding and telescoping mirrors, and a 17-speaker Harman Kardon audio system.

The biggest question may be price. While the gasoline V8 Power Wagon starts at just over $76,000, selecting the Cummins diesel adds $12,995.

The 2027 Ram Power Wagon Diesel brings tremendous torque and dramatically greater towing capability to the lineup. Buyers simply have to decide whether that extra diesel muscle is worth giving up some of the equipment that traditionally made the Power Wagon special.
