Mercedes-Benz has never struggled to keep the G-Class in the spotlight, and the upcoming 2027 Mercedes-AMG G63 Cabriolet looks ready to continue that trend. Even before its official debut, the company has released preview images showing a prototype with only minimal camouflage, giving enthusiasts a surprisingly clear look at what is coming.

Instead of completely hiding the vehicle, Mercedes left only a few sections covered, making it easy to spot the biggest changes. The front end remains familiar, carrying over the signature AMG grille, round headlights, and muscular bodywork that have made the G63 instantly recognizable. The real transformation begins behind the front doors, where the traditional fixed roof has been replaced by a fully retractable fabric top.

Unlike previous rumors suggesting a shorter 2-door version, the new Cabriolet keeps the practical 4-door layout. That decision allows passengers to enjoy the same spacious cabin while offering the unique experience of open-air driving. The soft top folds neatly behind the rear seats, creating a distinctive profile without dramatically changing the classic boxy design that G-Class fans appreciate.

The rear of the vehicle has received the most significant engineering changes. Mercedes redesigned the tailgate area to accommodate the folding roof while keeping the iconic rear-mounted spare tire. The spare tire cover now integrates the third brake light, since the upper portion of the tailgate has been reshaped to make room for the convertible roof mechanism.

Although rear visibility appears more limited with both the folded roof and spare tire occupying space behind the cabin, buyers interested in this exclusive model are unlikely to consider that a deal breaker. The Cabriolet is expected to become one of the most desirable versions of the modern G-Class, combining luxury, performance, and rarity in a single package.

Power is expected to come from the familiar 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged 8-cylinder engine found in the current AMG G63. That means buyers should enjoy the same thrilling acceleration, powerful exhaust note, and exceptional off-road capability that have helped make the AMG version so popular around the world.

Another noticeable improvement appears to be the roof operation itself. The prototype suggests Mercedes has developed a fully automatic system, eliminating the manual steps required on previous G-Class convertibles. If confirmed, owners may be able to open or close the roof with the press of a button, making the driving experience even more convenient.

Production is expected to begin at Magna Steyr’s factory in Graz, Austria, where every modern G-Class has been assembled for decades. With demand for the G-Class continuing to reach new highs, the return of the Cabriolet could become one of Mercedes-AMG’s most talked-about launches in years.
