2027 BMW M2 xDrive Changes Everything
The BMW M2 has built a loyal following by sticking to a simple formula: compact size, strong power, and rear wheel drive. For many enthusiasts, that combination has made the M2 one of the purest performance cars in BMW’s lineup. Now, for the 2027 model year, BMW is taking the M2 in a new direction by introducing all wheel drive for the first time.
The new BMW M2 xDrive arrives with the same twin turbocharged 3.0 liter inline six engine found in the current model, but the addition of BMW’s intelligent all wheel drive system changes the car’s personality. The engine produces 473 horsepower and 443 pound feet of torque, giving the coupe plenty of performance whether it is on a back road, a race track, or a daily commute.
One of the biggest changes is the transmission lineup. Buyers who choose the M2 xDrive will receive the 8 speed M Steptronic automatic transmission as standard. Drivers who still want to row their own gears can continue to choose the rear wheel drive version equipped with the 6 speed manual transmission. BMW clearly understands that many enthusiasts still value the traditional manual experience.
Performance is where the new M2 xDrive really makes its case. The added traction helps the coupe launch harder off the line, cutting the sprint from 0 to 60 miles per hour to 3.6 seconds. That is 0.3 seconds quicker than the rear wheel drive model. Using BMW’s rollout measurement, the time improves even further to 3.3 seconds. The car can also accelerate to 124 miles per hour in just 12.8 seconds.
While all wheel drive often raises concerns about losing driving engagement, BMW has engineered the system with enthusiasts in mind. Under normal conditions, the M2 xDrive behaves like a rear wheel drive car, sending power primarily to the rear axle. The front wheels step in only when additional traction is needed, helping maximize grip without sacrificing the playful handling character that M cars are known for.
Drivers who enjoy customizing the driving experience will appreciate the flexibility built into the system. Through the M Setup menu, owners can adjust multiple vehicle settings and even select a dedicated 2WD mode. In this setting, Dynamic Stability Control is switched off, allowing the driver to experience the car in a more traditional rear wheel drive configuration.
The M2 xDrive also comes equipped with the Active M Differential, which works together with M specific traction control software to optimize power delivery. This technology helps the car maintain stability during aggressive acceleration while still allowing skilled drivers to explore the limits of the chassis.
Visually, the M2 xDrive maintains the muscular stance that has become a hallmark of the model. Staggered wheel sizes include 19 inch wheels in the front and 20 inch wheels in the rear. Buyers who plan to spend time at the track can also select optional track focused tires for even greater performance.
Stopping power is handled by standard M Compound brakes featuring 6 piston front calipers and single piston rear calipers. This setup is designed to provide strong and consistent braking performance during spirited driving sessions and track use.
Top speed remains electronically limited to 155 miles per hour in standard form. However, buyers who opt for the M Driver’s Package can increase the top speed to 177 miles per hour, making the M2 xDrive one of the fastest compact performance coupes in its class.
The new BMW M2 xDrive is expected to arrive in dealerships this summer with a starting price of $74,950, including destination charges. While that represents a premium over the rear wheel drive model, the added traction, improved acceleration, and expanded performance capabilities may be enough to convince many buyers that this is the most versatile M2 ever built.
For years, enthusiasts debated whether the M2 should remain exclusively rear wheel drive. BMW’s answer appears to be simple: offer both. Drivers can still choose the traditional manual rear wheel drive experience, while those looking for maximum performance can now enjoy the confidence and speed of all wheel drive. That balance may be exactly what makes the 2027 BMW M2 lineup stronger than ever.
