2027 BMW i3 50 xDrive Test Drive – 463 HP Electric 3 Series

2027 BMW i3 50 xDrive Test Drive – 463 HP Electric 3 Series

The 2027 BMW i3 represents one of the biggest changes to the BMW 3 Series in decades. This is not simply an electric version of the familiar sports sedan. BMW developed the new i3 around its Neue Klasse architecture, giving the car a new electric drivetrain, new electronics, a completely redesigned interior, and technology intended to change how the car responds to the driver.

The first model arriving in the United States will be the BMW i3 50 xDrive. It uses 2 electric motors, giving it electric all wheel drive and a combined output of 463 horsepower and 476 pound feet of torque. BMW says it can accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 4.5 seconds. Those numbers put the i3 firmly into performance sedan territory, but outright acceleration is only part of what BMW is trying to accomplish.

Walking around the new i3, the Neue Klasse influence is immediately noticeable. The design is cleaner and less complicated than many recent BMW models. At the front, the traditional kidney grille has been reinterpreted for the electric era and integrated with a wide lighting treatment. The headlights and grille visually work together rather than looking like separate elements.

From the side, the proportions still communicate BMW sports sedan. The i3 measures 187.4 inches long, 73.4 inches wide and 58.3 inches tall, with a 114.1 inch wheelbase. Short overhangs and a relatively long wheelbase help give it a planted stance, while flush door handles and smoother surfaces contribute to better aerodynamics. Wheel choices range from 19 to 21 inches.

The rear continues the minimalist approach with a wide stance and horizontal lighting. There is noticeably less visual clutter than before, and that simplicity gives the car a more technical appearance. It looks modern without abandoning the basic proportions people associate with a BMW 3 Series.

Step inside and the transformation becomes even more obvious. BMW Panoramic iDrive changes the traditional dashboard layout by moving important information into BMW Panoramic Vision across the lower portion of the windshield. That means there is no conventional instrument cluster directly behind the steering wheel.

The centerpiece of the dashboard is a 17.9 inch Central Display positioned toward the driver. BMW Operating System X controls the interface, while wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard. An available 3D Head Up Display can place navigation and driver assistance information higher in the driver’s field of vision.

This cabin is clearly designed around software, but BMW has tried to maintain a driver focused feeling. Information is spread across different areas according to its importance instead of being concentrated on a single screen. The steering wheel controls, Panoramic Vision and Central Display are designed to work together, which should reduce the amount of time the driver needs to look away from the road.

The biggest question, however, is how an electric 3 Series behaves from behind the wheel. BMW has spent considerable effort making the i3 more than a comfortable electric sedan with impressive acceleration.

At the center of that effort is something BMW calls the Heart of Joy. This high performance computer coordinates the electric drive system with braking and important chassis functions. It processes information significantly faster than previous systems and allows the drivetrain and chassis to react together instead of behaving like separate systems.

That should become especially noticeable when entering and exiting corners. Electric motors can change their output almost instantly, giving the control system an opportunity to manage the car with a level of precision that would be difficult to achieve with a traditional drivetrain.

The i3 also places its large battery low in the vehicle, helping lower the center of gravity. Standard models use lift related dampers, while the i3 50 xDrive can be equipped with Adaptive M Suspension and sport steering through available M Sport packages. A new 5 link rear axle is also part of the chassis.

Regenerative braking plays an unusually important role. During normal driving, the electric motors can handle most deceleration and bring the vehicle smoothly to a complete stop. BMW calls one of the resulting functions Soft Stop, with the goal of making the transition to a standstill exceptionally smooth.

Range may be an even bigger headline than performance. BMW estimates the i3 50 xDrive will deliver between 446 and 468 miles of range using preliminary testing based on United States Environmental Protection Agency procedures. Final certified figures may vary, but if the production vehicle lands near those estimates, the i3 could make long distance electric driving considerably easier.

The sixth generation BMW eDrive system uses an 800 volt electrical architecture and new cylindrical battery cells. At a sufficiently powerful direct current fast charger, the i3 can accept up to 400 kilowatts. BMW estimates that approximately 191 to 208 miles of additional range can be added in only 10 minutes under suitable conditions.

The charging system also supports bidirectional energy functions. Vehicle to Load capability can turn the car into a mobile source of electricity, while Vehicle to Home technology is designed to allow the battery to provide energy to a home with the appropriate equipment.

Put everything together and the 2027 BMW i3 feels like much more than BMW replacing a gasoline engine with electric motors. Neue Klasse gives the company an opportunity to rethink the 3 Series from the battery and chassis all the way to the displays and software.

The real test will be whether all this technology preserves the character that made the 3 Series famous in the first place. With 463 horsepower, all wheel drive, a low center of gravity and the Heart of Joy managing the car’s responses, BMW clearly wants the i3 to remain a driver’s sedan.

The BMW i3 50 xDrive is scheduled to launch in the United States during the first quarter of 2027. An even more performance focused i3 M60 xDrive is also planned to join the lineup during 2027. For now, the i3 50 xDrive gives us the clearest look yet at what BMW believes the electric future of the 3 Series should feel like.
