Volkswagen is expanding its electric vehicle lineup with another model aimed at drivers who want the practicality of a sport utility vehicle without moving into a larger and more expensive segment. The new 2026 Volkswagen ID. Cross takes everything people liked about the original concept and turns it into a production ready crossover that sits below the ID.4. Built from the ground up as a fully electric vehicle, it offers a fresh design, a roomy cabin, and technology focused on making everyday driving easier.

Unlike the Volkswagen T Cross, which uses traditional combustion engines, the ID. Cross was designed exclusively for electric power. It rides on the latest MEB Plus platform, the same architecture found beneath the new ID. Polo. This dedicated electric platform allows Volkswagen engineers to maximize interior space while keeping the vehicle compact enough for crowded city streets.

Despite measuring just 163.5 inches in length, the ID. Cross makes excellent use of its footprint. The longer 102.4 inch wheelbase creates noticeably more room for passengers, while the flat floor gives rear seat occupants additional comfort. One feature that many drivers will appreciate is the small front storage compartment, adding 25 liters of extra cargo space for charging cables or other small items.

The rear cargo area is also larger than the one found in the T Cross, providing 475 liters of luggage capacity before folding the rear seats. That extra storage makes the electric crossover more practical for shopping trips, family errands, or weekend adventures.

Volkswagen has also introduced its latest styling direction with the ID. Cross. Clean body lines, smooth surfaces, and full width lighting elements give the crossover a modern appearance without becoming overly complicated. Unlike its hatchback sibling, the rear door handles remain in the traditional position, creating a more balanced and familiar look from every angle.

Inside, Volkswagen listened carefully to customer feedback. One of the biggest improvements is the return of physical controls. Traditional buttons replace many of the touch sensitive controls found in previous models, making everyday functions easier to use while driving. Drivers once again get physical steering wheel buttons, four individual window switches, and a dedicated volume knob between the front seats.

The dashboard features a 12.9 inch infotainment display paired with a 10.25 inch digital instrument cluster. The interface combines modern technology with graphics inspired by classic Volkswagen models, giving the cabin a familiar yet updated feel. Convenient climate controls remain accessible through dedicated buttons below the display, allowing drivers to quickly adjust temperature, fan speed, air conditioning, window defrosters, and air circulation.

Higher trim levels add several premium features rarely found in this size category. Buyers can choose 12 way power adjustable front seats complete with memory settings and massage functions. Music lovers can also enjoy a Harman Kardon audio system featuring 10 speakers, a subwoofer, and 425 watts of output for an impressive listening experience.

Volkswagen offers the ID. Cross with 2 battery choices. The entry level 37 kilowatt hour lithium iron phosphate battery delivers an estimated WLTP driving range of 196 miles, while the larger 52 kilowatt hour nickel manganese cobalt battery increases that figure to 271 miles. Fast charging remains competitive, with charging speeds reaching 90 kilowatts or 105 kilowatts depending on battery selection. Both versions can recharge from 10 percent to 80 percent in approximately 23 to 24 minutes.

Power comes from a front mounted electric motor available with 114 horsepower, 133 horsepower, or 208 horsepower. Volkswagen has not yet confirmed whether the more powerful 223 horsepower motor from the ID. Polo Grand Touring Injection will eventually be offered in the crossover. Even so, the available powertrain options should satisfy a wide range of buyers looking for efficiency, performance, or a balance of both.

The new electric crossover is expected to arrive in European dealerships this fall with a starting price of approximately €28,000 in Germany. That pricing places it well below the larger ID.4 while offering many of the same modern technologies and everyday practicality. As demand for electric crossovers continues to grow across Europe, the ID. Cross appears well positioned to become one of Volkswagen’s most important electric models.
