Toyota designed the hybrid system with durability as a priority. Instead of using a lithium ion battery, engineers selected a Nickel Metal Hydride battery pack because of its proven long term reliability under demanding conditions. The battery has a capacity of approximately 1.8 kilowatt hours and has been engineered to withstand extreme temperatures, heavy towing, and continuous off road use. Buyers choosing the GR Sport model also receive front and rear locking differentials along with the Electronic Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System, giving the vehicle even greater capability when navigating rocks, mud, sand, or steep trails.

The electric motor brings another important advantage off road. Precise low speed control is easier because the motor delivers smooth, instant torque without requiring high engine speed.
