2026 Chevy Blazer DESTROYS 1996 Blazer in Shocking Crash Test
For many drivers, vehicle safety is something that is easy to take for granted. Modern vehicles come packed with advanced engineering, stronger passenger compartments, sophisticated airbags, and crash avoidance technology. However, a new study from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety shows just how much progress has been made over the past 3 decades and how many lives those improvements have protected.
According to the study, crashworthiness evaluations introduced by the organization since 1995 have helped save nearly 50,000 lives. Researchers estimate that these safety improvements have prevented 48,352 traffic fatalities between 1999 and 2024. Beyond the human impact, the economic benefit is enormous, with estimated savings to society reaching approximately $538 billion.
To demonstrate the difference modern safety engineering can make, the organization recently conducted a dramatic head to head crash involving a 1996 Chevrolet Blazer and a 2026 Chevrolet Blazer. The test was designed to showcase how vehicle protection has evolved over the years.
The results were striking. While the passenger compartment of the 2026 Blazer remained largely intact, the older sport utility vehicle suffered extensive structural collapse. Engineers found that occupants in the modern vehicle would likely walk away with only minor injuries. In contrast, occupants in the 1996 model would have faced a high risk of severe or potentially fatal injuries.
The older Blazer experienced major intrusion into the cabin area. The dashboard and steering components were pushed toward the driver, dramatically increasing injury risk. The crash forces absorbed by the crash test dummy illustrated just how dangerous similar collisions could be in vehicles designed before many modern safety standards became common.
Researchers examined several crash test programs that have influenced vehicle development over the years. These included moderate overlap front crashes, driver side small overlap front crashes, passenger side small overlap front crashes, side impact evaluations, and roof strength testing.
Among these programs, the original moderate overlap front crash test produced the largest safety benefit. Introduced in 1995, the evaluation encouraged manufacturers to strengthen vehicle structures and improve occupant protection. The study estimates that front crash improvements alone helped save 28,697 lives.
Side impact testing also delivered major benefits. Since its introduction in 2003, the side crash evaluation is credited with helping save 18,224 lives. Improvements in side curtain airbags, stronger door structures, and reinforced safety cages have all contributed to better protection in severe side collisions.
Roof strength testing added another layer of protection by addressing rollover crashes. Although the evaluation was eventually discontinued after federal standards caught up with its requirements, it still helped save an estimated 1,432 lives during its operation.
Perhaps the most impressive finding is how quickly manufacturers responded to these safety challenges. When many of the crash tests were first introduced, only a small number of vehicles achieved top ratings. Today, earning a good rating has become the expectation rather than the exception across much of the automotive industry.
The comparison between the two Chevrolet Blazers serves as a powerful reminder of how far vehicle safety has advanced. What once could have resulted in life changing injuries is now often survivable thanks to stronger structures, improved restraint systems, and decades of continuous engineering improvements.
For drivers and families on the road today, those advancements mean far more than impressive test scores. They represent thousands of parents, children, friends, and loved ones who made it home safely because vehicles have become dramatically safer than they were just a generation ago.
