The most exciting feature is the new DiesOtto powerplant used in the Mercedes F700, a four-cylinder gas engine with the consumption benefits of a diesel. Consumption figures for the 5.18m long Mercedes F700 is an amazing 44.3mpg and this equates to a correspondingly low emissions rating of just 127g of CO2/km. The engine is mated to a new hybrid starter generator system and a seven-speed automatic trans, which sees the car accelerate from 0-100km/h in 7.5 seconds. The maximum output of the internal combustion engine is 238 horsepower the electric motor develops another 20 horsepower and the maximum torque of the system is 400 Nm. The hybrid module with its integral starter-generator helps to further reduce fuel consumption, mainly in urban stop-and-go operation. The internal combustion engine always is shut off when idling. Besides that, during coasting and braking the electric motor recovers energy which is stored in a special high-voltage battery and used for the next starting operation. Engineers have also added new active PRE-SCAN suspension, a new system that scours the road ahead using two lasers and automatically adjusts the suspension to suit.
