Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera has shaved weight & boosted power to create a special version of its 5.0-liter V10-powered Gallardo. Called the Superleggera, the lightweight version of the dramatically styled two seater makes its public debut at the Geneva motor show. Lamborghini officials say the car will be built in lower numbers than the standard Gallardo model. The company will begin taking orders as soon as the car is unveiled on March 7. Among the Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera’s weight-saving measures are a series of lightweight carbon fiber elements, including a new engine cover surround, rear diffuser, under body paneling, exterior mirror housings & transmission tunnel covering. In its attempt to shed further weight, Lamborghini has also replaced some glass surfaces, including the engine cover, with polycarbonate. Inside, carbon fiber-backed seats trimmed in Alcantara replace the standard buckets. Together they result in an impressive 45.5-pound reduction in curb weight, bringing the Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera in at 2926 pounds. In addition to the car’s low weight is a revised version of the Gallardo’s mid-mounted 5.0-liter V10 engine boasting remapped electronics & detailed changes to the inlet manifold for improved breathing & reduced back pressure in the exhaust. As a result, horsepower increases by 10 to 530-hp at 8000 rpm. Torque, meanwhile, remains unchanged at 376-lb-ft..
