Xiaomi YU7 GT Breaks Nürburgring Sport Utility Vehicle Record

The automotive world has seen plenty of surprising moments over the years, but few are as unexpected as a smartphone company walking into the Nürburgring and taking down some of the biggest performance brands in the industry. That is exactly what Xiaomi has done with the upcoming Xiaomi YU7 GT. Before the electric sport utility vehicle has even made its official global debut, it already holds one of the most talked about records in the performance car world.

The Nürburgring Nordschleife is not just another racetrack. It is one of the most difficult and intimidating circuits ever built, stretching across more than 12 miles with unpredictable elevation changes, high speed sections, and technical corners that expose every weakness a vehicle may have. Manufacturers from around the world use the track to prove engineering capability, and lap times there often become headline material for years. That is why Xiaomi’s latest achievement is turning heads far beyond China.

During an official timed run at the Nürburgring, the Xiaomi YU7 GT recorded a lap time of 7:34.93. That result was enough to push the Audi RS Q8 out of the top position among sport utility vehicles on the legendary German circuit. The difference may only be 1.76 seconds, but at this level of performance, even tenths of a second can represent major engineering gains.

The vehicle was driven by Xiaomi chief development and test driver Ren Zhoucan, who reportedly pushed the electric sport utility vehicle to nearly 186 miles per hour on the long straight section of the track. Onboard footage from the run shows just how stable and composed the YU7 GT remained even at extreme speeds. The vehicle appears planted, responsive, and surprisingly refined considering how new Xiaomi still is to the automotive industry.

What makes this story even more impressive is that Xiaomi is still considered a newcomer in the car business. The company built its reputation through smartphones, smart home technology, and consumer electronics. Most people never imagined Xiaomi would one day compete directly with established performance divisions from brands like Audi, Porsche, and BMW. Yet in a short amount of time, the company has already proven it is taking the electric vehicle market very seriously.

This is also not Xiaomi’s first major Nürburgring achievement. Earlier, the production version of the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra completed the Nürburgring in 7:04.95, putting the sedan into extremely elite territory among high performance electric vehicles. Xiaomi even tested a stripped lightweight prototype version of the SU7 Ultra that achieved a staggering 6:22.09 lap, showing the company’s engineers are aggressively pursuing track performance.

The YU7 GT used for the record attempt was not a completely standard production vehicle. Videos released from the track reveal that the interior had been modified for performance driving. The rear seats were removed to reduce weight, and a full roll cage was installed for safety and chassis rigidity. Those changes suggest the Nürburgring version was heavily focused on maximizing lap time performance rather than everyday practicality.

Xiaomi has also confirmed the sport utility vehicle featured an optional Track Package that customers may eventually be able to purchase. Details about this package are still limited, but it is expected to include upgrades designed specifically for high speed driving and track use. Larger brakes, stickier tires, revised suspension tuning, and aerodynamic enhancements are likely part of the package.

Performance numbers surrounding the YU7 GT are already creating excitement online. According to filings submitted to China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the electric sport utility vehicle may produce an astonishing 990 horsepower through a dual motor all wheel drive system. That would immediately place it among the most powerful sport utility vehicles in the world.

The claimed top speed of 186 miles per hour also puts the YU7 GT into rare territory. Very few sport utility vehicles, whether electric or gasoline powered, are capable of approaching those speeds. The onboard Nürburgring footage appears to support Xiaomi’s claims, as the vehicle reportedly reached 185.7 miles per hour based on Global Positioning System data during the lap.

Power is expected to come from a large 101.7 kilowatt hour battery pack. Xiaomi claims the sport utility vehicle could achieve up to 438 miles of range under the China Light Duty Vehicle Test Cycle standard. While real world numbers will likely be lower, the figure still suggests the YU7 GT could combine serious performance with strong long distance usability.

What is especially interesting is how quickly Chinese manufacturers are evolving in the performance vehicle world. Just a few years ago, most enthusiasts associated Chinese automotive companies with affordable transportation and emerging technologies. Today, brands like Xiaomi are entering conversations traditionally dominated by European performance giants. Records like this force the entire industry to pay attention.

The timing of Xiaomi’s announcement was also carefully planned. Although the record lap took place on April 2, the company waited until just before the official reveal event to share the results publicly. That strategy has dramatically increased anticipation leading into the YU7 GT’s launch. Social media discussions exploded almost immediately after the lap time was announced, especially among enthusiasts who never expected a Chinese electric sport utility vehicle to take down an established Nürburgring benchmark.

The design of the YU7 GT also appears heavily influenced by modern high performance electric vehicles. The body shape looks sleek and aerodynamic, with a low roofline, aggressive front fascia, and wide stance. Even from brief preview footage, it is obvious Xiaomi prioritized both efficiency and high speed stability.

One of the biggest questions now is how traditional luxury and performance brands will respond. The electric performance race is becoming more competitive every year, and companies can no longer afford to underestimate new players entering the market. Xiaomi has shown that deep expertise in software, battery technology, and electronics can translate surprisingly well into modern vehicle development.

For Xiaomi, this Nürburgring record is about much more than lap times. It is a statement to the automotive world that the company intends to compete at the highest level. Whether buyers fully embrace the YU7 GT remains to be seen, but one thing is already clear: Xiaomi is no longer just a smartphone company. It has officially entered the global performance car conversation in a very serious way.
