Watch the Lynx M20S Crawl Through Rocks and Mud
DEEP Robotics is putting the Lynx M20S through the kind of terrain that can quickly expose the limits of a conventional mobile robot. In this outdoor demonstration, the wheel legged machine tackles loose rocks, deep mud, wet grass, standing water, and uneven ground while continuously adjusting its stance to keep moving.
What makes the Lynx M20S interesting is the way it combines wheels with articulated legs. On smoother sections, the wheels allow the robot to move efficiently without taking individual steps. Once the terrain becomes difficult, the legs can change position and height independently, helping each wheel find useful contact with the ground.
The rocky sections provide one of the clearest demonstrations. Instead of simply bouncing across the surface, the robot constantly adjusts its legs as individual wheels climb over stones at different heights. The main body remains surprisingly controlled while the mechanisms underneath handle much of the movement.
Mud creates a completely different challenge. The wheels sink into the soft surface and become covered with dirt, yet the Lynx M20S continues pushing forward.
The demonstration gives a convincing look at why wheel legged robots could be useful for inspection, exploration, emergency response, and other jobs where predictable roads simply do not exist.
