Volkswagen Golf R Might Get Audi’s 2.5L 5-Cylinder: What It Means

Volkswagen Golf R Might Get Audi’s 2.5L 5-Cylinder: What It Means

If you love fast hatchbacks, this is the kind of news that makes you glance at your calendar and your bank account at the same time. Multiple reports say Volkswagen is exploring a range-topping Golf R that borrows Audi’s 2.5-liter turbocharged 5-cylinder from the RS 3. On paper, that could mean roughly 394 horsepower in European tune, or up to 401 horsepower if Volkswagen aligns closer to the United States RS 3. Either way, it is a huge jump over the current Golf R’s 328 horsepower four-cylinder.

Power is only part of the story. Expect a more serious setup underneath: a torque-splitting rear differential similar to the RS 3’s, a wider track, larger brakes, and forged wheels to keep unsprung weight in check. To satisfy the upcoming Euro 7 rules, engineers would likely add filtration, sensors, and revised mapping, which could add about 25 kilograms. The tradeoff is a soundtrack and mid-range punch that enthusiasts have wanted in a Golf R for years.

Timing is whispered for 2027, potentially as a limited celebration of 25 years of Volkswagen R. Pricing and availability remain unconfirmed, especially for the United States, but the intent feels clear: build the most exciting, most powerful factory Golf ever as the internal-combustion era winds down.
