New Mitsubishi Pajero Family Officially Confirmed
Mitsubishi is not simply bringing the Pajero back. The company is turning one of its most famous names into an entire family of SUVs, and that could make the return much more important than originally expected.
The newly revealed Mitsubishi Pajero will serve as the flagship of the lineup. It is a large, rugged SUV built on a ladder frame platform derived from the Mitsubishi Triton pickup truck. At 4,920 millimeters long, 1,925 millimeters wide, and 1,910 millimeters tall, the new Pajero has the size and proportions of a serious full size off road vehicle. Its 2,870 millimeter wheelbase also provides enough room for a 3 row interior.
But Mitsubishi has already confirmed that the Pajero family will grow. During the vehicle’s world premiere, 2 additional SUVs were shown covered in the background. One appears to be a compact Pajero, while the other is an even smaller model.
Mitsubishi has not revealed technical details for these upcoming vehicles, including whether they will use ladder frame construction like the flagship. A unibody platform could make more sense for the smaller models, helping reduce weight, improve efficiency, and keep production costs under control.
What seems likely is that Mitsubishi will carry the Pajero’s rugged personality across the entire range. Boxy styling, practical interiors, and some level of off road capability could help distinguish these vehicles from more conventional crossovers.
The full size Pajero will launch first in Thailand, where it is produced, before reaching additional markets. Mitsubishi plans to offer the new flagship in more than 100 countries and regions. Some markets will continue to know the vehicle as the Mitsubishi Montero.
For Pajero fans, this is becoming much more than the return of a single legendary SUV. Mitsubishi is rebuilding Pajero into a complete lineup, potentially giving buyers several different ways to own one.
