New 2028 Volvo XC40 Rendered And It Looks Stunning

Volvo appears to be preparing another major update for its popular compact sport utility vehicle, and the latest prototype sightings suggest the upcoming model could look quite different from the version currently on sale. While the Volvo XC40 has already received updates over the years, this new facelift seems to bring some of the most noticeable styling changes since the model first arrived.

The biggest transformation takes place at the front. Spy photographers have captured prototypes wearing a completely redesigned fascia that gives the crossover a more modern and upscale appearance. New headlights appear to feature an updated interpretation of Volvo’s signature lighting design, while the daytime running lights adopt a fresh T shaped look. The grille also appears larger and more premium, taking inspiration from the latest Volvo XC90. Together, these changes give the vehicle a stronger road presence and a closer connection to the rest of Volvo’s newest lineup.

Another noticeable difference is the hood design. The upcoming XC40 seems to feature a new hood with a more sculpted leading edge, creating a cleaner transition into the grille and headlights. The front bumper has also been redesigned, replacing some of the decorative styling elements with a more functional and refined appearance.

From the side, Volvo appears to be keeping things familiar. The overall profile remains recognizable, which is not surprising considering the XC40’s proportions have remained one of its strongest design features. However, new alloy wheel designs are expected to help distinguish the updated model from its predecessor.

The rear section receives meaningful changes as well. Updated taillights feature a revised internal structure, giving the crossover a fresher and more contemporary look. The tailgate has also been reshaped with flatter surfaces and sharper character lines. Volvo is reportedly redesigning the rear bumper too, removing the current P shaped lighting elements and replacing them with simpler reflector units for a cleaner finish.

Underneath the redesigned bodywork, the XC40 is expected to continue using the Compact Modular Architecture platform that Volvo developed alongside Geely. This platform has supported multiple models across both brands and has proven flexible enough to accommodate several powertrain options.

Speaking of powertrains, Volvo is expected to continue offering a broad selection. Buyers should still be able to choose from mild hybrid, plug in hybrid, and fully electric versions. The electric model, now marketed as the EX40, will likely continue alongside the updated XC40 as Volvo expands its electrified lineup.

Although Volvo has not officially revealed the vehicle, industry expectations point toward a debut sometime in 2027. If these prototype images accurately preview the production model, the updated XC40 could arrive with a much more premium appearance while retaining the practicality and efficiency that have made it one of Volvo’s most successful vehicles.
