The all-new, fifth-generation Discovery will redefine the large SUV, according to Land Rover. It’s a full-size premium vehicle, of which the most noticeable design feature is the stepped roofline, which optimizes headroom for passengers travelling in the third row of seats and accommodates the Discovery’s stadium seating configuration, which positions each row slightly higher than the one in front of it. The new model retains traditional design elements, but adds many technological updates. A limited-run “First Edition” model (only 529 units available in the U.S.) will feature etched map detailing on the aluminum trim for doors and dashboard, special badges, bold color choices, and a comprehensive list of standard equipment. The Discovery is available in three other trims: SE, HSE, and HSE Luxury. A diesel engine is available with the latter two trims.

The 2017 Discovery features 7 full-size adult seats that are instantly configurable from Apple and Android smartphones using remote Intelligent Seat Fold technology. The two rear seats can be replaced with child seats. The interior features 82.7 cu. ft. of cargo space and various storage innovation, plus up to 9 USB ports, 6 120-volt charging points, and an in-car 3G Wi-Fi hotspot for up to eight devices. The Dynamic Design Pack adds leather upholstery and sporty steering wheel and pedals.

The optional Land Rover InControl Touch Pro infotainment system includes a 10-in. touch screen positioned high on the center console. This apparatus reduces the number of switches on the center console by one third, Land Rover says. The latest navigation and entertainment technologies include door-to-door navigation, which can share directions to a paired smartphone to give users further directions when they’re traveling on foot. Seamless iOS and Android connectivity combine with a 17-speaker Meridian digital surround system and 3G Wi-Fi to enable online streaming or playing music directly from a connected device.

The 2017 Land Rover Discovery features 4WD and offers a choice of conventional or diesel engine, each paired with a ZF 8-speed automatic gearbox. The 340-horsepower, supercharged, 3.0-liter, gasoline V-6 engine produces up to 332 lb.-ft. of torque. The 254-horsepower, turbocharged, diesel V-6 engine delivers 443 lb.-ft. of torque from as little as 1,750 rpm.
