BMW Wireless Charging – Video

BMW Wireless Charging – Video

BMW Wireless Charging is a convenient function for customers and takes us one step closer to BMW’s vision of “Charging easier than refuelling”. As soon you get home, your car automatically hooks into your Wifi network. Blue lines on the display tell you where to park so you’re directly over the charging plate.

Then, a circle appears. When this turns green, all you need to do is switch off the ignition and the vehicle charges automatically. In practical terms, it’s a lot like an electric toothbrush or a mobile, where inductive charging is commonplace now. But this has much more power. There’s a charging coil on the floor, and another in the vehicle. These transfer the energy electro-magnetically to charge the high-voltage battery pack. The charging station was developed for use in garages, in the open air, or in carports. We’re charging at 3.2 kilowatt hours, so it takes three-and-a-half hours in total to recharge a completely flat battery.

That’s somewhere between the time a wall box and a normal household socket need .Also, with this system there’s no need to worry about overcharging. The vehicle detects when it’s fully charged and tells the charging plate to stop. This system is completely safe for humans and animals, and within all the legal limits. It also has integrated a Living Object Detection System, so if a cat gets under the car, for instance, it will automatically switch off.

It is also well within all the legal limits for people with hearing aids or pacemakers, so anyone who uses medical equipment of this kind has nothing to worry about.BMW Wireless Charging will be available to customers in the BMW 530e during the course of 2018.
