A few fully camouflaged test mules of the 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class (W213) were caught on camera performing testing rounds in Germany.

There’s not much to say about in terms of design as we all know it will blend styling cues from the Mercedes C and S while the platform is going to be sourced from its smaller brother.

Despite an increase in overall size, the new Mercedes  E-Class will be lighter than the outgoing model thanks to the MRA architecture which will also enable a roomier cabin and a bigger trunk.

It will be packed with the latest technological advancements from Mercedes, including a remote parking system controllable through a smartphone app.

It’s also getting adaptive headlights with 84 individual LEDs per cluster, adaptive cruise control capable of setting speed based on road signs, rear-seatbelt airbags and adaptive steering which will enable the Mercedes E-Class to follow the car in front even if there aren’t any lane markings.

In terms of engines, reports are indicating the availability of a new family of straight-six units including a twin-turbodiesel 2.9-liter rated at 313 bhp (233 kW) along with a quad-turbo version of the same engine with two e-turbos and a 400+ bhp (298+ kW) output.

The new Mercedes-AMG E63 will likely come early in the W213’s life cycle as it has already been caught on camera. It will utilize the same twin-turbo V8 4.0-liter from the C63 and AMG GT, but it will probably be massaged to deliver more power than the current 510 PS (375 kW) and 650 Nm (479 lb-ft).

A public debut is programmed for January next year at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
