18th Classic Meeting at the Opelvillen – Video
More than just a touch of pioneering spirit was on display at the 18th Classic Meeting at the historic Opelvillen on Sunday with the legendary rocket-propelled RAK 2 from 1928 being just one of the star guests. Excellent weather, around 3.400 vintage treasures and a relaxed support programme attracted around 30.000 visitors to the largest one-day vintage car meeting in Germany. Veterans of all brands ranging from vintage cars to tractors, motorbikes and bicycles were on show on the bank of the river Main. And on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the legendary Opel GT, 50 owners presented their vehicles on a special show area.
Anke Felder, Managing Director Human Resources and Labour Director Opel Automobile GmbH, arrived in a citrus yellow 1972 Commodore B GS/E rally car. Rüsselsheim city councilman Nils Kraft and brand ambassador Joachim Winkelhock also joined the motorcade in a stylish Opel GT. Car designer, former bicycle racer and racing driver Erich Bitter was obviously behind the wheel of Bitter CD. Further models ranging from the Kadett A Coupé to the Calibra via the Rekord C convertible completed the colourful Opel line-up.
“The Classic Meeting is a real highlight,” said Opel Labour Director Anke Felder. “The enthusiasm showed by the people from Rüsselsheim and the visiting vintage car lovers shows that the event has established itself and is attracting fans from near and far. Personally, I find the link to modern age fascinating which goes very well with the presentation of the Opel Insignia Grand Sport Exclusive .”
Elsewhere, the RAK 2 racing car demonstrated how Opel laid the foundations for manned space flight and sounded in the rocket age 90 years ago. Fritz von Opel ignited 24 solid fuel rockets during his legendary drive on the Avus in Berlin in 1928 and set a need speed record of 238 km/h. The Opel grandson’s next project, the Opel Motoclub, was also exhibited in front of the Opelvillen where it was joined by Opel icons such as the Aero GT, the Experimental GT and the GT Concept.
